'Tis the season to be busy...

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Little's here in 40' C Perth, Australia! Hoping that you've all been keeping well and have had time to relax with family and/or friends during the season.

We've had a different kind of Christmas this year. It's been one with new challenges with ministries and roles on base, but also with the family being sick over Christmas and beyond. It all started with MJ getting sick, then Kamryn, then Lauren, then Levi, then Kamryn again, then Aaron (that's me!) I feel slightly better today but I also said that yesterday before I felt rotten again. What doesn't kill us only makes us strong?

Despite the sickness we persevered to still enjoy our time together at home. The temperatures at Christmas were unseasonably low which was a huge relief for us. We didn't make it to all of the base events but we did our best to celebrate with our friends here at YWAM Perth. We were blessed this year with lots of people giving toward gifts for our family. Our most memorable ones would be a family Xbox as well as 5 tickets to go see The Lion King live production. Some are more excited about this than others, but I'm sure it'll be amazing. We've got a babysitter for Lauren that night!

As most of you may know I was asked to takeover the leadership of a DTS here at YWAM Perth. Sven, who led our DTS, needed to step back due to family health. He and his wife and daughter are dear friends of ours and we said to each other one night (and God), "We'll do whatever we can to help them to get through this time." Within two days I was asked to takeover leading Sven's Frontline Discipleship Training School. They were half way through their lecture phase when I was introduced to the class as their new leader. I was very nervous, and I'm sure they were uncertain too. However, they came together as a group and pulled our family into their family. They just recently left for outreach into Nepal and Northern India, and really I'm quite proud of all of them. As I stepped in I knew they needed someone to provide consistency and encouragement. Through feedback I learned that I was the man for the job. The class was amazing and will do so well on outreach. I learned a lot about God and how he prepares us for challenges that we never would've thought we could do. I felt like I was drowning at times with the administration and schedule but most of the time I felt like I was thriving and ended up really enjoying myself.

During the Frontline DTS outreach I'll be joining them with Kamryn for 18 days. We're going to build a home in Nepal with them and my ministry Homes of Hope. We're going back to the same village that Homes of Hope worked in August this year. I'm really looking forward to continuing to develop relationship with the villagers there, seeing my Nepali friends and doing outreach with Kamryn! It should be so fun and I look forward to seeing the school again for some hard work. If you didn't get a chance to see it here's a video of the last time Homes of Hope was in Nepal:

 Due to the running of the school and then Christmas time I haven't had time to begin fundraising for this trip to Nepal. I've bought tickets however, trusting that I'll see the money come in. It's about $1750 each for Kamryn and I. Kamryn however has been on it for about a month now and has bravely asked people that she felt promoted to ask for support. So far she's seen a great response and has seen $850 come in! What a missionary kid!

Exciting events coming up for us as a family in January/February of 2016 is:
Kamryn turns 13 while on summer camp. It's her first birthday away from us and it's a special one:(
We go for a 5 day family camp with other YWAM Perth families in Albany (south of Perth)
Aaron and Kamryn travel to Nepal January 24 - February 10
Lauren's 2nd birthday!!

Past, Present and Future

PAST: We had visitors! For nearly 4 weeks we had Aaron's parents come to stay with us. We laughed, played cards, relaxed, ate really well, went on little road trips and just enjoyed each others company. A week into their trip, Aaron and his Dad hopped a plane to East Timor for 5 days where Brian (Aaron's Dad) got a glimpse of Aaron's ministry, met the Homes Of Hope team and had some hands on time in the village setting up for the build.

Their time with us flew by but we got some much needed rest and relaxation. It's always so great to have family come and always so tough to have to say good bye.

PRESENT: We have some new, very sudden news regarding Aaron and his role at the base. Yesterday our friend who leads the Frontline Discipleship Training School (DTS) had to step down as the school leader to address some important family concerns. Yesterday morning Aaron was asked to pray about taking over the leadership of the school for the rest of the lecture phase, 6 more weeks. After a quick chat with me, some prayer and slight oh-my-goodness emotions, we both felt that this was right for Aaron to do. He took over the school today.

It's a whole new experience for Aaron. He has staffed a DTS in the past but leading the school has a whole different level of responsibility. He has one staff  and 19 students. We know this means a lot of change of our family schedule. We have to be flexible. He has to be readily available to the students and provide them with the best leadership he can. Both of us are excited for this next 6 week season. We will be stretched for sure. Aaron will learn a lot and though it will be tough at times, we feel blessed to be able to step in and help our friends during their time of need.

FUTURE: Just last week a new Discipleship Training School was birthed. Any guesses as to what

it's called? You got it, it's the Homes Of Hope DTS! Aaron was approached about the idea of it just a few weeks ago. He prayed, felt it was a great idea and got started thinking about who was going to lead it. Benny, who is currently part of the Homes Of  Hope ministry, will be leading the school starting in April 2016! Aaron will be fairly involved, mainly behind the scenes (we think) at this point. The photo to the right is of our base director and founder, Shirly Brownhill, praying for Benny after the Homes Of Hope DTS was announced to the YWAM Perth staff.

I know that's a lot of info to take in in one newsletter but a lot has happened in a very short time. We would really appreciate your prayers for the following:

- Change brings challenge. Pray for unity within our family amongst the busyness.
-for Aaron to have a sound mind, free from fear or uncertainty as he leads the DTS
- for Aaron to have the ability to multi task as he leads both a DTS school and his Homes Of Hope ministry.
-and as for me, grace to be a good mum and wife as we go through a busy time!

Father & Son

I find it interesting that a lot of updates from missionaries (including us) speak of an apology for not having written in a while; or so they should. Take that as you will;)

Thank you! To everyone who helps us out while we're in missions. Definitely loving life!

I'm back from Nepal as most of you already know. We had an amazing time there! My Homes of Hope ministry (five of us) went to Nepal to build a home. We met two schools from YWAM Perth there and worked with them to build a home for a widow. Her name was Buti and she lost her home during the earthquake. The finished result was simple and strong. We met her need.

The house eventually got a door on and windows in. It was a challenging build with small piece of land, many people to organize (25) and the travel to get there was two hours. But we really felt God covering us in all of the details. We showed up, were willing and we worked hard. Success

Next for Homes of Hope is we go to East Timor again in October. We meet another YWAM Perth school there and continue work in the village called Bahareduk. Here's the video of our last build: https://vimeo.com/131634723

I was really looking forward to passing on leadership of this trip to Andrew, and I still am. The idea was that I wouldn't be going on this trip. I've traveled to Nepal 3 times, East Timor 2 times and Canada once in the past year and was looking forward to a break.

But I'm going on this one too...because my Dad is coming with me!!! We're only going for a few days but he's preparing to bring a team next year from Salt Spring. My Mom and Dad are visiting us here in Perth in October. This is such great opportunity in so many ways. Mom will stay back with Robin and the kids, and Dad will help me set up this house build. He'll also scout it out for himself and his future team. I never thought I'd be doing missions with my Dad, we're  both stoked.

The kids are really excited about the visit from Grandma and Grandpa. However, it's possible that the Grandparents are even more excited. They're coming for four weeks, so we can have some time in Perth at our home and we'll spend some time down south in Busselton at a resort. The kids also have some school holidays, so no school work to worry about. Hopefully the weather will be decent as we're in spring here in Australia.

We have  few things/outreaches to be praying about that are coming up next year which is exciting, will stretch us even further and because they seem almost impossible they must be from God! We will keep you all posted about that as soon as we know more details.

Normal Life?

Time for honesty.
People who aren't in missions have an idea of what full time missions looks like. Their thoughts and ideas are often way off and not quite accurate. Are we following God's plan? Yes. Is it glamourous? No.

You see, we have both gained and lost monthly supporters because of what our life in missions is actually like. We are based in a westen nation. It's not third world. It has running water. We have enrolled our kids in activities outside of YWAM. Sometimes we do 'normal' things like go on dates and enjoy dinner out as a family. The hard part about this is that some people think that because we live by faith, we shouldn't enjoy such things. Maybe this isn't your view but we can tell you from experience, it is the view of some. For some, we haven't gone on enough overseas missions trips to continue having their monthly financial support. For some, they want us to have the chance to do 'normal' family events and they enjoy giving us monthly support so we are able to take our kids out for dinner, or a movie or enjoy a day of fun. It's a fine line and we never really know if we are doing it right or wrong.

What we do know is that we are doing exactly what God wants, and thats fine with us. Because our finances come from some of you, from old DTS friends, from our home church and the new church we have started attendinge, from family and from good friends. Hey, we want to be doing it right! We want to be giving you a realisitc idea of what we are up to. When we need prayer, when we are doing well, when we have needs, when we are planning an outreach overseas and we even want to communicate when we have been blessed with finance to have a family outing. We want you guys to be the first to know.

So, all that said, we would like to share with you what we have been up to recently. As we mentioned in our last post, we were planning on going south of Perth to Bussleton for a little family weekend away before Aaron hopped on a plane for the 7th time in 10 months. It was an AMAZING time that we needed very much. We had lots of fun taking the kids to the beach, playing tennis and mini golf and watching movies in our holiday house.

After a lot of fundraising, we have been able to enroll Mikayla in Scouts! She absoluelty loves it. We love that she is making new friends and learning new skills. Because the kids are homeschooled they do miss out on doing some social things so this is exactly what we felt she needed.

Recently I was able to leave the other kids with Aaron and take Mikayla way with her "pack" of about 24 other Scouts. We went on a camping trip in the sticks where she learnt knot tying, how to set a course and use a compass, sang countless camfire songs and so on. All the things I invisioned a scouts camping trip to be! Her and I really enjoyed having some time together.

 We're really enjpying watching Levi come out of his shell as he learns how to play AFL (Aussie Rules Football). It gives him some rough and tumble time with boys his age. He has a great understanding of the game and has a great kick on him! He plays well, listens to the coach and is improving a lot.

We have tried to get kamryn onto a soccer team but we were too late for registration. She has been playing soccer with base kids on wednesday nights where she has the chance to learn new skills, play in a team setting and run those long legs fo hers! She's at the age where she really needs to be engaged in activites so we are trying to offer her lots of things to do. She raised enough money to send herself to Wintercamp in a few weeks which is a week of fun, God, wisdom and teaching for teens. She'll be with about 50 other teens and she's VERY excited. Our prayer is that she goes deeper in her faith and starts to learn for herself what she wants that to look like.

This is the church we have visited a few times. Last year we felt that it was time for us to find a church to attend. Not that we don't get what we need from YWAM but more so that we can make friends in the community and branch out a bit. We have been received very well from the Bedford Community Church. They have a youth group that Kamryn wants to check out.

When we haven't been for a while, they call us and make sure everything is ok. I was so blessed when they called me while Aaron was away to offer their help in any way I needed, whether it was someone to grocery shop or offer babysitting if I needed. It was so kind! It's been great to connect with people there and we look forward to what God has in store for us and how relationships will form.

We hope that our transparemcy and honesty is refreshing to you and doesn't offend. We knew going into this life that we wouldn't have any control over our finances. It's scary and sometimes we forget that God is in control and knows what's happening before it happens. It's been 3 years of learning, growth, adjusting and massive stretching! We have made mistakes, we know, but we have also received so much grace and for that we are so thankful! We never want any of you to feel like we take for garnted the finance you give, or that we don't feel your prayers. We LOVE it when you guys respond to our updates and we highly encourage you to ask questions if you ever feel like we aren't bgeing good stewards of the finance we receive.

As for upcoming events? For the next 3 days, our base is part of a confrence called GoFest. It's featuring guest speakers talking about the importance of missions, GOing into the nations and equipping with tools to do so. The founder of YWAM, Loren Cunningham, is here! This is very exciting and might be our very last opportunity to hear him speak. He is 80 years old and lives in Kona and is still part of that base.

Near the end of July, Aaron is off to Nepal with his team. There they are doing a house build, their first one in that nation. They have two teams who will be helping on this build.

The kids and I are long overdue to go along on an outreach so we will pray into it and see when we are to go along! It's a lot of work taking the whole family and since having Lauren, we haven't felt the ability to go. Now that she is getting older, it's looking like we will start trying to go along with Aaron more often.

PRAYER POINTS

Robin has had to carry a lot of the household responsibilities while Aaron is away. It is often challenging and slightly stressful having the 4 kids without help for usually 3 weeks at a time. Pray for her that God would continue to give her grace to carry the load and be a good Mom to the kids in the midst of it!

Aaron's ministry has grown from 3 to 5! He now has 4 staff members in his mnistry which is an answer to prayer. One of those is a woman which is another answer to prayer. Aaron could use prayer that he is a good leader, that he can juggle the task of running a ministry yet maintain his roles at home as seemlessly as possible.

Needs. We have random needs. We need a dryer. Yes, we live in a hot climate but winters are cold and wet. This is need is about $250. We have a major car service to do as well, it's about $1500. With Lauren being sick, and most of having to visit the doctors, we're out about another $500 with medication included.

And, as usual, we always need prayer for our finances. We know this goes without saying, but we really do need to raise more monthly support. Aaron has been traveling every 6-8 weeks since we got back to Perth last October. Most trips will be about $2000 Aussie dollars. Our prayer is that we can raise a team of people who would support Aaron's trips into Nepal and East Timor.

One of the hardest parts of being called into over seas missions is being away from home. We miss all of you very much and each of you play a huge roll, as our support team, that carries us through. Family, Life and Outreach!

Hello Friends! Well, first thing firs t;we are so thankful that Aaron was safe and sound at home in Australia at the time of the earthquake in Nepal. He had been there just two weeks before the quake. His time there was really productive, he made plans to head back there sometime in August where him and his team will start working with a small village called Dhamaura. The work there seems so small and insignificant after such devastation and loss from the earthquake. However, after praying; he and the team feel to continue on with their plans by providing homes for the people of this particular village. Thanks to those who provided finance and prayers for Aaron while he was away.

Aaron has been away a lot since October so he surprised us with a weekend get away! With his birthday money and a Groupon deal, he booked us in at a holiday house on the beach. We will go to a place about 2.5 hours south of Perth called Busselton. The kids are all excited as there are 3 bedrooms and king sized beds, movies,  heated swimming pools, tennis courts and very beautiful beaches. It'll be the first time we've had a get away as a family here in Perth, and as a family of 6! It also happens to be Mother's Day that weekend as well, great way to celebrate.

We arrive home from that on the 10th of May and Aaron will leave us on the 16th of May to go to East Timor!This will be the first Homes Of Hope build. Aaron will be traveling with his two staff and will be joined by two DTS (Discipleship Training Schools) who will be sharing a house build as part of their outreach. He will be gone for nearly 3 weeks. It's exciting for him to be going in to the nations to do what he's called to do, but it's hard as he must be away from our day to day life. The kids always go through a small transition time but we're all adjusting to this and getting better at it.

Life in general is really good and getting busier as the kids grow. Aaron and I feel like it is really important for the kids to be involved with team sports or group events, especially as they get older. 

**Kamryn is learning the value of fundraising as she is trying to send herself to Winter Camp this coming July. It is like teens camp at Cowichan Camp where she will be gone for a week, making new friends and learing to love God deeper. Monday nights she has cell group with the teens on base. She's playing sports on Wednesday nights with the teens and young adults and really enjoys that.

**Mikayla has been going to scouts on Tuesday nights. The first 3 times are a free trial so she's been going to see if it's something she would enjoy doing. She can be quite shy but we think it would be good for her to make some friends outside of YWAM. Here's Mikayla being shy...

**Levi is doing great at school and working ahead of his grade level. He is playing AFL (Australian Rules football).He really likes it, he's making friends plus it's great for him to run off all of his energy! He is a very active boy who does well when kept busy. He's an amazing big brother, and loves chasing Lauren, and making her laugh. It's such a blessing to see him grow in this.

**Lauren is a sweet girl, very curious and always busy! She is very steady on her feet and starting to say small words. She has been sick for the last few weeks and sleep is very fleeting but she is a very lovely girl. She has many friends on base, lots of big kids who love to follow her around and make her laugh. She's quite smart (we feel) for her age, and is quite obedient to instructions, which is nice.

We have been making the most of the time we do have together and now that fall has arrived, it's lovely to be outside! Bikes, roller blades, walks are just some of the things we have been doing on weekends. Movies and games in the evenings. Aaron has taken to reading the kids at bedtime, they love that. They just finished The Hobbit. We have been attending a small church on Sundays. We are on the younger side of the congregation, the majority are white haired but they have been very welcoming towards us. Not yet sure if it's a church we will attend regularly but it's a sweet group of people and the message has been encouraging. 

Well, that's about it from us for now.  I'll leave you with some prayer points:

-Please pray for us as we prepare to send Aaron off to East Timor in a few weeks. It's a very remote village where any healthcare is about 4 hours away by car. I always worry about that but trust that he is in good hands. The chief of the village is always so good to Aaron and his team so I know they'll be well taken care of.

-Pray for my sleep! Lauren is a very poor sleeper, only sleeping about 1.5 hours at a time in the night. After about 15 months I am starting to hit the wall. I need sleep to be a good parent especially while Aaron is away.

-Finances. Lots of travel for Aaron means we need to see more monthly support coming in to pay for his flights and ground fees.

Just in Time!

Just in Time!

Recently I just got back from Nepal; Robin said I could go, if I made it back in time for Lauren's birthday. Well, I flew back to Perth and arrived just in time!

We hosted her first birthday party at Hyde Park, with cake, decorations, a water park and good friends and family. The weather was perfect and we're in awe that she's already one years old! She's a wonderful, sweet, funny girl whom we all love very much indeed.

Five buses, eight taxis, one rickshaw, one hired car, one jeep ride, one microbus, one hitchhike and one small domestic airplane; 2 nights in Kathmandu, two nights in Surkhet, one night on a bus, two nights in Pokharra, two nights in Hatauda, one night in Kathmandu again, and one last night on an airplane heading to Malaysia. Only 12 days away from home but we packed in a lot of action into our Nepal scouting trip!

The trip was for Homes of Hope, my ministry, to scout Nepal and see if it's a viable nation to come build homes. Obviously there's lots of need in Nepal, but we needed to find the right spot. Our goals were to find a genuine need, near a location where YWAM was already established. 

Surkhet is west of Kathmandu and is a likely location that we'll bring teams to build. This is the location where the main river flooded and destroyed dozens of villages back in July 2014. Many lost their lives and most lost their homes. This particular village was built on a hill near the river but was wiped out by a mudslide. YWAM has relationship with them already. 

Hatauda is South of Nepal and I worked with a man named Birbal. He guided us to a village near the India/Nepal border. This village is mainly Muslim and was very poor. I'd call it a rural slum and I found it very challenging to be there. This place is a good location and in need of homes.

After much thought and prayer we feel that both locations make sense to build homes in. I travel back to Nepal at the end of March, very soon. This will be to look at each location with more detail; house design, prices, accommodation, transportation, etc. I'll be in Nepal for about a week, and will combine it with trip to India.

YWAM Perth  has been working for a year in Kolkata, India. I've been asked to come along on a follow up trip regarding applied technology. This trip is to meet with those that expressed interest a few months ago in things like aquaponics, biogas and sand filters. This is a subject that I'm quite interested in personally, but also relates closely with home building and community transformation. 

Total trip length would be about 18 days and total costs would be about $1750-1900 AU. I've seen about $350 come in from 2 bake sales and we will have one more before I leave. Also I've got money left over from the previous trip to Nepal. I still need to see about $1000 come in to cover all costs.

I turn 36 in 3 days and am happy to have Mikayla's 10th birthday only 6 days later. Maybe people will forget mine! Our family and two other YWAM families are going camping for two nights about two hours south of Perth. There's a nice river there and lots of nature around. We're looking forward to time away from the city, spending time as a family and giving our new SUV a decent test.

Robin and the kids are back into school now and are doing well. She's finding it more challenging this year with Lauren being so active. The kids are all thriving in the home school environment and Robin is quite an amazing teacher. She's also kept busy with ARMS, doing office work when she can. Levi will be starting up Aussie Rules Football for his second season quite soon.

Kamryn has joined a 'cell group' of about 20 kids from the base and they hang out, play games, study the bible. She's really enjoying it and I feel that it's so good for her as she's growing so fast!

I've been reflecting on our life recently and my goodness are we blessed. We've got so much to be thankful for! Family, friends, health, amazing jobs, support back home. Recently we were asked by our current tenants if they could renew the lease on our house. They hope to stay for up to three more years! Thanks everyone for your continued support, what a team we've got!

                                                                          Good Bye 2014

What a year! We saw many wonderful things happen in 2014. Here's. Short recap for those of you who aren't in close contact with us!

In February we welcomed our fourth child, third daughter, Lauren Elizabeth into the world! She was born on the 21st of February weighing in at 7lbs 4oz. She's awesome! Such a lovely little lady who brings a lot of joy and laughter into our lives!

In March Aaron went on hi very first Homes Of Hope scouting trip to East Timor. He was joined by a friend and together they went into the village of Bahareduk to check out this little village, meet the village chief and chat about the needs there. It was a short but great trip .( Aaron and Mikayla also celebrated birthdays in this month.)

April, May and June were spent as per usual... Robin in the home school co-op with the kids and working afternoons in the office with ARMS and Aaron getting ideas and strategies together for Home Of Hope.


Mid July through to mid October we were in Canada! This was meant to be a 7 week trip. It turned into a 3 month trip because of a little whoopsie we made on our Australian Visa application. Lesson learned!  We really made the most of our time back at home and I have to say that we had the best weather! We spend a few weeks playing slow-pitch whole getting over jet lag, that was a real treat as Aaron and I both really miss playing ball. We got to introduce Lauren to her family in Canada. We got to met the new pastor of our home church, connect with friends, spend lovely evenings at the beach, were fed amazing meals everywhere we went, were treated to some fun filled days off island, got to attend three weddings! It was a busy but memorable time that's for sure.

Once we returned to Perth in mid October, Aaron jumped right in, helping build our new staff/student accommodation, most commonly referred to as "Somerville". It houses about 50 people all together and is very much needed as we are kicking off our largest January quarter we've had in a while.

November was cool, Aaron and a small team went on their first official Homes Of Hope outreach! It was him and two others...a small but mighty team! They went in Bahareduk and had the honor of staying in the chief's house. They spent 2 1/2 weeks there in East Timor, helping build a YWAM house in the village so that in the future when teams go (insert YOUR name here___________) they'll have a place to stay! It was hard work but very rewarding. They got to spend time with the children and teens of the village, sharing the gospel and playing with them.

December was a mix of lots of things, mainly prepping for Christmas! We shared Christmas day with about 410 people so thought we were far from family we were far from lonely! We spent boxing day at the beach where we enjoyed bacon and eggs for brekkie and swam in the ocean the rest of the morning. It was a wonderful way to end a very busy year! Oh yeah, and we were blessed with a new-to-us car! Our supporters were very loving and generous and supplied enough finance for us to get a reliable car.

So, there you have it. We had many ups and downs in 2014. Some months were very difficult, we were challenged and stretched greatly while other months were a lot of fun and we saw great release in finance when we needed it the most.

From our hearts, we thank all of you who love us, pray for us, support us and cheer us on. We have the honor of serving God here with YWAM Perth. It's the most rewarding and yet the most difficult thing we have ever done. We love walking out what God has spoken over us and yet our hearts hurt to be so far from our loved ones back in Canada. You guys are always on our hearts, in our prayers and loved so deeply by us! Thanks to our monthly supporters who lovingly give financially to us each month. Thanks to those of you who pray for us, your prayers are so important. Thanks to the rest of you who are our cheering squad, who send us encouraging notes from time to time. You are all so valued by us. May you all be blessed in 2015!
